Teaching on Temptation: Staying Strong in Your Walk With God
Teaching on Temptation: Staying Strong in Your Walk With God
Hello and welcome to this message.
Today I want to share a strong burden I received about something very important in the Christian walk: learning how to overcome temptation.
The Lord impressed on my heart that many believers are not being taught how to fight temptation effectively. Instead, much focus is often placed on blessings and success, while the foundation of seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness is sometimes neglected.
But Jesus made it clear:
“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33)
This means our first priority must always be God’s will, His righteousness, and a life that pleases Him. Everything else comes after.
The Real Battle for a Believer
The true battle of the Christian life is not against people, but against sin and temptation.
Temptation is what opens the door to compromise, and compromise leads to spiritual decline. This is why Scripture warns us to stay alert and prayerful.
“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.” (Matthew 26:41)
We are called to be spiritually awake, not careless or distracted.
Self-Examination and Spiritual Awareness
The Bible encourages us to examine ourselves to ensure we are truly in the faith:
“Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.” (2 Corinthians 13:5)
This means we must not assume we are spiritually strong just because of religious activity. We must consistently check our hearts, motives, and obedience to God.
True assurance comes from walking in obedience and being led by the Holy Spirit.
The Role of the Holy Spirit
Victory over temptation is not achieved by human strength alone. It is through the help of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit:
- Guides us into truth
- Convicts us when we are wrong
- Strengthens us to resist sin
- Helps us live a life pleasing to God
A believer who is not sensitive to the Holy Spirit becomes more vulnerable to temptation.
How to Overcome Temptation
Jesus gave us a simple but powerful model in prayer:
“Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” (Matthew 6:13)
Here are key principles for overcoming temptation:
- Stay prayerful and watchful
- Stay rooted in the Word of God
- Avoid situations that trigger sin
- Resist temptation early, not late
- Depend on God’s strength, not your flesh
Temptation is easier to overcome at the beginning stage. The longer it stays, the stronger its influence becomes.
Fleeing From Sin
The Bible says:
“Flee from every appearance of evil.” (1 Thessalonians 5:22)
This means we are not called to negotiate with temptation but to flee from it. Wisdom often lies in avoidance, not engagement.
Living a Life of Victory
God desires that His children live in victory over sin, not in bondage to it.
Jesus said:
“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)
Freedom comes from truth, obedience, and consistent fellowship with God.
No believer is forced to fall into sin. Through grace, prayer, and the Holy Spirit, victory is possible.
Final Encouragement
Stay close to God. Guard your heart. Be honest with yourself. And do not take temptation lightly.
God is faithful and will help anyone who sincerely seeks Him.
May the Lord strengthen you, guide you, and keep you from falling. May He give you grace to walk in purity, wisdom, and spiritual strength.
Amen.
