That I May Not Cause Pain: A Prayer for Transformation

Bible Study: “That I May Not Cause Pain”
Based on 1 Chronicles

In The Bible, Jabez prayed:

“Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain.”
— 1 Chronicles 4:10

Many people ask God for blessings, favor, healing, and deliverance — and rightly so. These are gifts God desires to give His children. But there is an important part of this prayer that believers should not ignore: “Keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain.”

As Christians, we must examine our lives and ask ourselves:
Are we hurting others through our actions, words, or behavior?
Are we living in a way that honors God?
Are we walking in purity, love, and righteousness?

God does not bless evil. We cannot expect God’s favor while deliberately harming others, living in bitterness, deceit, immorality, or causing emotional and spiritual damage.

Jesus Christ taught us to love our neighbors as ourselves, walk in righteousness, keep our hearts pure, and treat others the way we want to be treated.

We should avoid anything that destroys:
Harmful words
Bitterness and unforgiveness
Sexual immorality
Deception
Manipulation
Abuse
Idolatry and ungodly practices

At the same time, being kind does not mean allowing people to abuse or mistreat you. Healthy boundaries are important. Even Jesus corrected wrongdoing and did not tolerate hypocrisy.

We should pray daily for grace, purity, wisdom, self-control, spiritual strength, and a heart that desires holiness.

The Bible says:
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.”

When we sincerely desire righteousness and quickly repent when we fall short, God helps us by His grace.

May our prayer always be:
“Lord, keep my hands clean. Keep my heart pure. Let my life bring healing, not pain.”

May God grant us grace, mercy, peace, holiness, and protection through Jesus Christ. Amen.
